The Keys to a Healthy Heart

Heart disease is the leading killer of men and women in the United States. February is Heart Month. Spreading the word, staying active, and knowing your risk is the key, this month and every month. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has some great advice, Pennswood Village can also help.

Although there are many risk factors that contribute to heart diseases like smoking, poor diet, physical inactivity, and obesity, early action and taking preventative measures, like exercise, can improve heart health and decrease risk.

No matter your fitness level, fitness trainers at Pennswood Village wellness center can help you become your best, most healthy version of yourself. They can help you organize and implement an exercise plan catered to your individual fitness goals. Whether you would like to improve your strength, or increase your endurance, fitness staff members are there to help. There are opportunities to exercise alone, with friends, or with a trainer.

Pennswood kicked off Heart Month with the “Wear Red Day” event on February 6. The event encouraged residents to wear red and attend a party in the wellness center that included raffles, healthy snacks, and a t-shirt drawing. Residents were also encouraged to take the necessary steps to begin an exercise routine and work on their heart health.

Other wellness events this month include Pilates, yoga, and Zumba classes, to promote heart health while having fun with fellow residents. Classes are held throughout the week and are led by wellness staff.

But the wellness center aerobics room and pool aren’t the only places to exercise at Pennswood. Specialty wellness events and trips are spread throughout the month, like walking trips around campus and other local attractions. Every resident is encouraged to participate because these exercise occasions can be personalized to your own fitness level. For example, some community residents like to take long walks on walking trips, while others prefer to take a causal stroll just nearby.

Wellness staff members are also currently developing a fitness program to bring together residents from all levels of care.
