In Her Own Words: Eadie Shanker’s Journey from New York City to Pennswood Village

Eadie Shanker moved from New York City to Pennswood Village two years ago. She writes about the process that led her to this decision in hopes that her fellow New Yorkers and teacher union members might benefit from her experience:

I retired in 1997 and spent almost two-decades living alone in Manhattan. By 2015, I was slowing down and did not want to live alone in the future. I wanted to be in a supportive community, but I had no idea of how to begin my search. Exploring Creative Opportunities at Pennswood Village

The life of the community at Pennswood Village thrives on its residents’ artistic interests and creative energies, which are evident as soon as you step on campus.

“When you walk into the community building, there’s a dedicated art gallery that rotates every two months with an exhibit by a professional artist,” resident Julia Beers explains. “The artist comes, gives a talk, then we go look at the work. It makes it more of a learning experience.”

“Some really superior artists have come here,” she notes.
