“What I wish I’d known before moving to Pennswood Village…”
Residents move to continuing care retirement communities for a variety of reasons: the amenities, exceptional healthcare options, they’re tired of cooking, to eliminate house maintenance, and many others.
But once many residents move in, they come to find there are so many more reasons than they had originally imagined.
We asked several recent Pennswood residents to share what they wish they had known before moving to Pennswood Village. See what they had to say below.
“They have everything here available for your lifestyle,” says Jerry Heinicke, a resident of almost 6 months. “There are more activities than anyone could ever imagine.”
Resident organizations and club meetings, trips to the movies, the opera and symphony, continuing education classes, volunteer opportunities, social events like parties and dinners, exercise classes, ipad classes, and crafting classes are among just some of the activities and events that happen regularly.
“It doesn’t matter what background you have. There’s a club, committee or activity for you to participate in. It just depends on how much you want to get involved, or how little you want to get involved. It’s here,” adds Jerry.
George Hynson, a Pennswood resident for about 5 months, had this advice to offer for anyone looking to move in: “Come visit! Meet a number of residents here, particularly if you aren’t from a nearby area, and also look at the tax benefit and healthcare aspects.”
Another resident, Dolly Cannon, had this to advice to share, “Do it as early as you can so you can enjoy the benefits that they have to offer.” She has been a resident for about 6 months. “Since moving here, I became aware that I had more living to do, regardless of age. I wanted to meet people and go places and do things that I wasn’t able to do in the past, because I was doing things like working.”
“I would have joined the wait list sooner,” said Barbara Zarzeczny, a resident of Pennswood for about 4 months. “My daughter encouraged me to, but I waited. Even if you’re not absolutely sure, join the wait list.”
The Priority Reservation List is an opportunity for people to start planning for retirement ahead of time. The average wait time for some of the floor plans can be up to several years, so the sooner you join the program, the sooner you can begin planning for your long-term future.
Moving to a new home can be stressful and life changing, but take it from these new residents: it’s life changing in the best way.
Jerry admits, “I should have done it sooner!”
