A Day in the Life: The Landscape Department
It’s 3 a.m. on a Sunday morning in February. The snow is falling lightly and the members of the Landscape Department are warming up their vehicles, getting ready to begin a day with no end in sight. This is a day in the life of the Landscape Department during the winter season. They’re always on call no matter the time or day. With a bag packed with extra clothes, it looks like it’s going to be a big storm and the sleeping accommodations will be an empty apartment in the Gurney building.
It’s 6 a.m. and the temperature is already 80 degrees. The temperature is going to hit a high of 96 degrees today, and not to mention, the humidity. The Landscape Department is warming up their vehicles, getting an early start to try and beat the heat. This is a day in the life of the Landscape Department in the middle of the summer.
Regardless of the weather conditions, the six members of the Landscape Department actively keep the property of Pennswood safe and aesthetically pleasing. Some of the tasks include: the weekly mowing of the property, spreading 350 cubic yards of mulch, daily maintenance of landscape beds to control weed growth, trash removal from the independent living buildings, pruning trees, building paver walkways, and applying weed control and fertilization to the turf. Spring, summer, winter and fall, the department is always active, and at times, it seems like the department does it all.
