The Pennswood Resident Art Gallery

Works from Rodin, Renoir and Whistler line the halls of famous galleries like the Guggenheim, National Gallery of Art and Musée d’Orsay in Paris, but Pennswood Village claims its own collection of fine arts ranging from sculptures, pottery and collages, to oils, watercolors and photography. It’s a source of great pride in our community when visitors admire the art on our campus for us to say the artist calls Pennswood home.

The community has a designated art gallery to showcase Pennswood talent – The Resident Art Gallery. “Located just inside our main entrance, The Gallery showcases five exhibitions each year featuring solo as well as group shows around various themes. The Gallery is open to the public and each exhibition is celebrated with a reception,” said Elaine Daniels, a  porcelain sculpture artist, and member of the Resident Art Gallery Committee.

“The Gallery is managed by a committee of residents,” said Committee Member Joyce Shaffer. “Together we meet monthly and plan for future shows.”

Committee Member Mary Wademan continues, “We feature five exhibits each year. The committee selects show themes and creates titles.” Possible shows coming to the Pennswood Resident Art Gallery include:

  • Interiors
  • Three-person
  • 20-20 vision
  • Seasons
  • Nostalgia
  • Close-ups
  • Depiction of fabric
  • Location scenes

Before each show, volunteers on the committee collect the art, hang or position the pieces and take down the art once the show ends. Each show runs for two months and is introduced with a reception.

“Our gallery receptions are festive; open to Pennswood Village residents, friends, family, and the public,” explained Committee Member Nancy Arnold. “The artist or artists are also usually in attendance.”

According to Elaine Daniels, many creative people live at Pennswood, including newcomers. “Many of the Resident Art Gallery Committee members are artists in their own right,” she shared.

"Three Artists: Three Media" Art Gallery

To cultivate creativity, Pennswood offers classes and committees in watercolor, collage, ceramics, quilting and other art mediums led by both resident instructors and teachers from Bucks County Community College. In addition, budding and seasoned artists gather on Saturdays and Sundays in the Activities Center to perfect their craft.

In addition to the Resident Art Gallery, other galleries showcase resident-created work such as textiles, ceramics, decorative paper, and fashion crafts. And for even more art to enjoy on campus, the Pennswood Art Gallery exhibits fine art by artists from outside the community.
