As part of the 40th anniversary celebration of the opening of the Pennswood Art Gallery, we welcome Shirley Mersky.  She is a long-time  resident of Bucks County, with close ties to Pennswood Village through her husband Dr. Martin Mersky.

Her work, mainly landscapes and still lives, is in the tradition of Bucks County artists. Furthermore, it seems appropriate to exhibit Mersky’s work during the darkest time of the year. Her paintings are full of light and color.  She begins her landscapes out of doors in order to see how light effects the shapes and colors and then usually finishes them indoors, sometimes repainting them in a larger format.  She paints in oil, taking full advantage of that medium in executing design details. Clearly she knows how to draw. Mersky started doing still life paintings at a later time but her interest in how light defines the objects is still an important consideration.

Shirley Mersky graduated from Dickinson College with a BA in English Literature and Art History. Later she received a 4-year certificate in painting from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.

We know that Pennswood residents will enjoy this artist’s work.
