Growing Something New: Pennswood Collaborates with Backyard Eats

Something fresh is growing at Pennswood Village!

Something fresh is growing at Pennswood Village!

Pennswood recently collaborated with Backyard Eats, a Greater Philadelphia organization specializing in the design, installation, and care of edible gardens. Through this new partnership, five rows within Pennswood’s Community Garden have been dedicated to growing a variety of fresh herbs, including rosemary and chives.

Once harvested, the herbs will make their way from the garden to Pennswood’s kitchens, where our Culinary team will incorporate them into dishes served across all four of our dining venues. It is a small but meaningful way to bring fresh, locally grown ingredients directly to residents’ tables—and it doesn’t get much more local than our own backyard!

Residents have already expressed their excitement about this new partnership and are looking forward to seeing—and tasting—the herbs in dishes served across Pennswood’s four dining venues.

This collaboration is a natural fit for Pennswood, where gardening, sustainability, wellness, and community involvement have long been valued. Our Community Garden is already a special place where residents can connect with nature, share their knowledge, and enjoy the simple satisfaction of watching something grow. These five new rows add another layer of purpose by creating a direct connection between the garden and the dining experience.

Another unique feature of the new herb rows is the addition of QR-code plant markers. Residents can simply scan the codes to learn more about each herb and how it grows. Backyard Eats also provides helpful resources such as care visit summaries, seasonal guides, and ongoing educational tools, making the garden an opportunity to continue learning throughout every growing season.

Fresh herbs may be small, but they can make a big difference. A sprig of rosemary or a handful of chives can add beautiful color, flavor, and freshness to a meal. Knowing those ingredients were grown right here on Pennswood’s campus makes the experience even more special.

As these herbs begin to grow and flourish, we look forward to seeing—and tasting—the results of this exciting collaboration. From the Community Garden to our kitchens and ultimately to the table, our partnership with Backyard Eats is another example of the thoughtful connections that make life at Pennswood so unique.
