Pennswood Art Gallery Hosts Opening for Demetra Tassiou

“Escape” by Demetra Tassiou. Mixed media on wood panel, 48” x 48.”
On Sunday, May 20, 2018, an exhibit of art work by Demetra Tassiou will open at the Pennswood Art Gallery, 1382 Newtown-Langhorne Road., Newtown, PA with a wine and cheese reception from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m., preceded by an illustrated presentation by the artist from 2:00 to 3:00 in Penn Hall. Both events are free and open to the public.
Tassiou’s work is elemental and abstracted, using shapes that have an organic quality. She says her pieces “can be viewed as exploding or imploding, erupting or collapsing, regenerating or decaying.” With a process of tearing apart and repositioning elements of previous work, she constantly re-invents and allows for the evolution of her oeuvre, thereby always maintaining a connection between previous subjects and new ideas.
In “Diversity,” Tassiou uses conventional printing techniques to create complex multi-level pieces which introduce a subject in multiple ways. Titling of her work is always minimal – encouraging viewers to find their own connections and interpretations.
Tassiou studied painting, art education and ceramics at the University of Athens in Greece, her native country, to earn a Bachelor in Fine Arts. After coming to the United States she earned an MFA in printmaking from the University of Pennsylvania.
