Pennswood Art Gallery Hosts Opening Reception for Samantha Miller on Sunday, March 25, 2018
On Sunday, March 25, 2018, an exhibit of work by Samantha Mitchell will open at The Pennswood Art Gallery, 1382 Newtown-Langhorne Rd., Newtown, PA with a wine and cheese reception from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. preceded by an illustrated presentation by the artist from 2:00 to 3:00 in Penn Hall. Both events are free and open to the public.
Mitchell’s work traces out the topography of a pile of boulders, or pieces of wood, or trash, or huge cord skeins or knots, or the human face in large detailed drawings with laid-in gouache washes. Making the micro into the macro she hopes lets us see the world around us in a universal textural way. She says, “The tactility of my subjects is an attempt to deal with them on a microscopic level…. looking at things this way gives matter a kind of infinite identity…. I like looking at things that are falling apart and/or coming together.” Her most recent work is abstracted to tiny lines and shadows translating landscapes influenced by visits and residencies in the Great Basin and Sonoran deserts.
A graduate of Oberlin College, Mitchell got her MFA at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Her work has been exhibited at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, the International Print Center of New York and is part of the permanent collection at the Woodmere Museum and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
