On Sunday, May 19, 2019, an exhibit of Lara Cantu-Hertzler’s paintings will open at the Pennswood Art Gallery with a wine and cheese reception from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. preceded by an illustrated presentation by the artist from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. in Penn Hall. The Pennswood Art Gallery is located in the Community Building of Pennswood Village, 1382 Newtown-Langhorne Road, Newtown, PA.

Cantu-Hertzler uses a melange of mediums such as oil, encaustic, pastel, alcohol ink, among others bringing to her work a unique relationship between the female figure and her surroundings. Sometimes we see a narrative social scene; at others, Cantu-Hertzler gives us an exploded architectural, whole house vision incorporating one young lone female figure. We get a hint of the flavor of life in a Philadelphia neighborhood. At other times she incorporates more abstraction to open a philosophic dialogue with the viewer.

A young painter, Cantu-Hertzler is a graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts who lives and paints in Philadelphia. Her work often shows the exploration, decay, and loneliness of life on the fringes of a big, old city. As she says, “There seems to be an emotional relationship between these spaces and the figure….I’ve been drifting back and forth between representation and abstraction….I never paint what I see, my ultimate goal is to paint from within.”

Cantu-Hertzler has exhibited widely and has won numerous awards from the Philadelphia sketch club and the Philadelphia National Arts Program, as well as a full fellowship to the Vermont Studio Center.

The Pennswood Art Gallery, which has been exhibiting artists for 34 years  – including such famous names as Harry Leith Ross, Daniel Garber, and more recently Jon Redmond, Earl B.
